Start with the operating gap. EDR supports endpoint investigation, MDR buys a managed detection and response service, and XDR connects investigation across security domains. Exposure management helps prioritize preventive work. GRC supports risk and assurance processes, while awareness training supports employee security behavior.
Define the job before the product
Write one sentence describing the problem your team cannot currently resolve. “We need another security platform” is too broad to evaluate. “We cannot investigate endpoint alerts after hours” identifies a staffing and service question. “We cannot agree which exposure to fix first” identifies a prioritization question.
A single supplier may offer several categories. That does not make the products interchangeable, or mean every component is included in the same subscription. Keep the proposed offering and its operating owner in view.
Match the gap to a category
| Starting problem | Category to explore |
|---|---|
| Unclear exposure priorities | Exposure management |
| Endpoint investigation and containment | Endpoint security |
| Unstaffed monitoring or response | Managed detection and response |
| Investigations span security domains | Extended detection and response |
| Employee recognition and reporting | Security awareness training |
| Fragmented controls and assurance evidence | GRC and compliance |
Keep complementary work visible
An exposure platform may help an IT team prioritize changes while an MDR provider investigates active threats. An EDR product may provide the telemetry an MDR service needs. A GRC platform may record control evidence from these tools. Evaluate the handoffs rather than expecting a category label to cover all of them.
Ask one ownership question
For every required activity, write down who operates it. Include monitoring, approvals, change execution, evidence collection, and verification. An attractive demonstration is not an operating model until those responsibilities are clear.
Build a shortlist by category and use the same pilot brief for each candidate.
